Cheap ugg-style boots

As someone who has worked in the running shoe industry I am a bit of an anorak when it comes to watching my fellow runner's gaits.

I often find myself running behind people and noticing if they over pronate or not! Lately, though I have been walking behind many teenage girls as they amble along the street and have been horrified at how seriously they over pronate in the cheap soft boots that have become so fashionable over the last year or so. Yesterday there was an article on the BBC about the damage that these girls are doing to their ankles, knees, hips and backs because there is no support in these boots. That is clear to see! They are basically a sole with an upper stitched directly onto it. Compare this to a running shoe that is made up of many components including outsole, midsole, shank in the midfoot area, cushioning systems, integrated support on the upper and a medial post support for those over pronators.

Some of these girls over pronate so much in their boots that they are actually walking on the upper with the sole skewed out to the side. I can feel my knees aching just by looking at them! What puzzles me is why they are out there. I've spent a fair bit of time in Australia where the UGG boot originated and they are considered to be slippers in their native land. A much better environment for them when all is said and done!
