Marvellous Mimi storms Spartathlon

First Briton home as half of the field retire

‘Marvellous’ Mimi Anderson, the long-distance, record-breaking running grandmother from Smarden in Kent, has returned triumphantly from Greece having completed her latest ultra running challenge – the iconic 153 miles (245kms) ‘Spartathlon’.

With a cut off time limit of 36 hours and run in very demanding terrain and climatic conditions, Mimi stormed the race in her typical determined style to finish 37th of 285 starters, 3rd lady overall and the 1st UK finisher in 32 hours.33 minutes 23 seconds – and her time was only 15 minutes away from the 2nd overall ladies place.

Spartathlon is an historic ultra-distance foot race and one of the most difficult and satisfying ultra distance races in the world because of its unique history and background. Only the strongest and fittest can hope to complete the course within the time limit and as is typical, half the field did not make it in 2011 – there were only 143 finishers. The winner was an Italian man in a time of 22.57.40.

This latest success follows on from her other 2011 achievements, which include the ‘double’ ‘Badwater’ (292 miles of non-stop running back in the USA in July and for which she set a new women’s record by 21 hours and the third fastest time ever for doing the double) and finishing 3rd overall and 1st female in The Glenmore 24hour Trail race with a total distance of 112 miles.

Mimi would like to thank her many sponsors without whom her race attempts would not be possible. These include Buff headwear, CherryActive recovery supplement, Ed & Phil Active, elete electrolyte drink, ENGO blister prevention patches, Likeys adventure gear, Neovite colostrum supplement, Sunwise sunglasses, ToeToe socks, The Inkerman Group, Wemmi Wipes and Wigwam socks
