Noel's 223 marathon challenge

Helping those who are too little to help themselves

We were honoured to have Noel Bresland come onto the runbritain stand at the Virgin London Marathon to claim his ranking! We started chatting and heard his story. He has set himself an extraordinary challenge and has been inspired to do so by an incredible little boy named Ethan.

So what’s the 223 Challenge? Simply put he's going to run 223 Marathons in memory of his nephew, Ethan, who along with his twin sister was born prematurely. Over 223 days Ethan fought bravely before passing away. He inspires Noel in this extreme challenge to raise money for Bliss, the charity that helps little ones born too early to win their own personal marathons. That’s one marathon for each day that Ethan fought his brave fight. We know what you are thinking: He is crazy, needs his head checking, overly ambitious, it’s bad for his legs and it’s going to take ages! And guess what, he would say yes to all of the above but he knows it is going to be a lot of fun and will help others along the way.

His first marathon in this challenge was in London in April 2009. Since then he has continued to add to the total. On Sunday 2nd May he ran the Neolithic Marathon - 26.2 miles Avesbury to Stonehenge! He explained that it was one of his favourites last year. "I was really looking forward to it again. A complete contrast to London, off road, through fields and mud at times and less than 400 runners (although some very friendly walkers along the way). It did rain a bit though but not enough to dampen the spirits and even the monster hill between miles 9 and 10 didn't get in the way! 4 hours 30 ish again and 16 out of 223 down. I really would like to start some training in between runs soon as i used to get round in under 3:45. But with one every 2 weeks maybe im asking a little much!" His next event is the Brathay Windermere Marathon on 16th May. If you are going to be there make sure you look out for him and give lots of encouragement. It will help him along the way with his inspiration and determination.

"I never got to hold Ethan, but he is with me every day. He sits on my shoulder, giggles in my ear and gives me a pat on the back when I get tired. These runs are for my family, Ethan and for me, but they are also a great way to raise money for Bliss and the cause they represent. I WILL get them done and would really appreciate your support on this journey, donating to Bliss would be the best way possible. I hope this has encouraged you to donate to a really worthwhile cause. At the very least, I hope you have been touched by Erin and Ethan’s story and are encouraged to go away and give somebody you love a hug and a great big smile. I will be smiling every time I run.

Donations gratefully received here
