Running and ipods
Do they or do they not go together?
Last week a man was struck by a plane and killed whilst running on a beach and listening to an ipod. They say that it is unlikely he heard it coming as it was 'basically gliding' and he was listening to his ipod. There have been similar cases. Two years ago a woman had her legs severed when she crossed a railway on her regular running route. Authorities say she probably didn't hear it coming as she was listening to her ipod.
These are freak accidents but let's face it - it's not safe practice. Let's consider the things we generally hear when we are out for a run. Cars, cyclists, other people, dogs. An ipod will block all of these sounds. It is important to be alert whilst out running in order to stay safe.
So why do people choose to listen to music whilst they run? The reasons are usually about motivation, making the time pass more quickly and taking the mind off feeling tired or uncomfortable. Let's take those things one at a time:
Motivation - I will make myself a better person if I find motivation from within myself. I am far more likely to succeed if the desire to do something has come from within. My motivation will also affect other people. It is infectious and I will motivate others.
Making the time pass - I will find myself an inspirational route where I will notice the scenery whether it is urban or rural. I will listen out for birds singing, children playing, people chatting and laughing.
Taking my mind off feeling tired or uncomfortable - I will reflect on my day at work and plan strategies for resolving problems and challenges that I face. I will evaluate my relationships, my work-life balance, my future goals.
The other thing I may do is find a group to run with and turn my fitness regime into part of my social life. So if you do run with your ipod I dare you to ditch it on your next run and see if any of the above work for you!
