The SBS Hamilton Half Marathon

Do you fancy a down under? The 2011 SBS Hamilton Half Marathon will be held on 2 October. Hamilton is located on New Zealand's North Island approximately 80 miles south of Auckland. Situated on the Waikato River, the terrain of the city is pretty flat. New Zealand will be waking up to spring in October with temperature around 8 - 18 degrees. The course uses paths that run the alongside the Waikato River providing great views and and some picturesque bridges to cross. If the half marathon is a tad on the long side there are the options of 10k and 5k. They also have a unique Children's Marathon where children run 5 kms each week leading up to the event and then run the final 2.195kms of their marathon on race day! When they cross the finish line they receive a medal and certificate. This has proved to be a real winner at the event.

All events cater for runners and walkers. The entry fee for the Half Marathon is $45.00, 10km is $35.00, 5km is $25.00. The event is now in it's seventh year and has become an iconic Hamilton event. This year it coincides with Rugby World Cup and on the day of the event there is a pool game in Hamilton at 6pm between Fiji and Wales! So those wanting to catch two events will be lucky!

If you are staying around the area before or after the race why not join the Hamilton Road Runners for a few training sessions? They meet at the Hamilton Yacht Club on Lake Rotoroa, a great running location. Their sessions often end with the opportunity to hydrate and replenish glycogen stores, in other words, have a cuppa or something stronger and something to eat! They are a sociable bunch!
