Top 10 tips to keep you running this winter

How to keep your running motivation in winter

Dark nights, wet weather and cold mornings – winter is officially here! But the winter months need not be all doom and gloom for your running training – you just need a little nudge to stay motivated and keep up with your winter running sessions. But when a warm bed, a comfy sofa or a swift one at the pub all serve to tempt you to skip a run session – we have put together 10 top tips to keep you running this winter.

  • Set a goal
To keep you focused, set a realistic target to achieve by the end of the winter. It may be as simple as increasing your training speeds and times, but monitor yourself against this goal weekly to keep you on track.
  • Get out early
This may be the last piece of advice you want to hear, but if you can drag yourself out of bed for a morning session, it is a great way to get your training out of the way – leaving your evenings free.
  • Go shopping
New gear equals a new you, which can equal improved motivation and performance. Get out to your sports or running specialist and find out what is new for the winter season. New running kit could inspire you to step out of the door even on the gloomiest morning.
  • Cross-train
Nothing is more likely to keep you going than adding some variety to the day. Avoid the cold weather and take advantage of indoor facilities. Look into what else you can do. For example, swimming is great activity to improve your flexibility, strength and general fitness and is not weather dependent.
  • Wrap up
When the cold weather kicks in, ensure you are prepared – even the most dedicated of runners will find their motivation wanes during a cold session. Make sure you layer-up and wear a lightweight hat and gloves when you head out – you can always take them off during your session if you get too hot.
  • Train with a friend
This is great for companionship or for the rivalry, or both! A running and training partner will keep both of you motivated. You can check each other’s performances and use it to motivate each other, and you are less likely to miss a session if you have planned to go with a friend.
  • Add variety
Try different places to train to keep you fresh. How about the gym? Treadmill running is still extremely beneficial – it is gentler on the knees and a perfect training alternative if the weather is miserable and an outdoor session is impossible.
  • Make it social
After your run, treat yourself with a drink at the pub or by meeting up with friends for dinner or a movie. The thought of a bit of relaxation time with others will get you through your session, go on – you deserve it.
  • Don’t be too hard on yourself
If you do miss a day – don’t let it dampen your dedication and enthusiasm – it is not the end of the world. Just make sure it does not become a habit, get back out there, tomorrow is another day.
  • Have a night off
Always dedicate at least one evening off a week, go out for a meal or meet friends. Don’t let training rule your life, make it part of your life. That way you won’t feel like a slave to the regime.
