How does an 87k race attract 16,000 runners? Are there really that number of people capable of doing it or even wanting to do it? We spoke to Ellie Greenwood who ran it for the first time, and by the way, finished 4th lady! She says that Comrades has the same sort of appeal in South Africa as the London Marathon does here. Just as we see nearly every runner we know target London and each year we enjoy the build up to it, Comrades enjoys a similar frenzy in South Africa.
