Vicky Binns 60 second interview

Vicky at last year's Great North

Vicky Binns plays Molly Dobbs in the long running soap, Coronation Street. She has had a very busy work schedule during the last year, on a major storyline, as her character has been involved in an affair with her husband's best friend. When she's not on set she gets her running shoes on and goes out for a run or a training session in preparation for the Great North Run. When she caught her breath we managed to catch her for a one minute interview.

Vicky with Matthew Wolfenden of Emmerdale

Why did you start running?
I watched the marathon on TV and it inspired my brother and I to sign up for a smaller 10k race. Little did I know this would be the start of a five year hobby full of the trials and tribulations that running brings. I blame Ken Lomas the founder of the Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research team. He collared me at the end of the race and that was it!

How has your running progressed?
I can run faster and further!

What has made the difference?
Though I loathe it and don't do it as much as is required to get my best times, sprinting a 5k on the treadmill and upping the minutes in intervals until I almost have to hold on seems to work for a better 10k time. I don't enjoy interval work as much as a pleasant steady run but I know mixing it up is advised.

What events have you got coming up?
The Great North Run is my favourite that we do for the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research Team. It's a real challenge and the support is fantastic. The whole team get involved in that one so the dinner and drinks afterwards are always fun and a welcome reward.

How will you prepare for it?
With not as much time on my hands I will do spinning classes and a few 8 -10milers (I hope)

What is your target?
Mainly to enjoy it and get round. I did it in 1hr 48mins previously but am aware that I've not trained as much and need to get on that treadmill as soon as possible for that kind of time, so I'll be happy with an enjoyable run and the acheivemant of raising the profile and money for the fund.
