Volunteers

Most road running events require volunteers - with some events being over subscribed in this area and others desperately scrambling around in the days leading up to the event. The purpose of this site is to share good practice and ideas so that race organisers can not only attract but also, just as importantly, retain good and motivated volunteers.

We need to explore the many and various roles volunteers undertake when working on an event and how we can use their skills for our and their benefit. We should strive to recruit, recognise, reward and retain our volunteers.

We will consider:

•    links to athletic clubs
•    links to other sports clubs
•    attracting volunteers from outside the sport
•    links to volunteer agencies and networks
•    marketing
•    reward schemes
•    briefing and training of volunteers
•    case studies/best practice
•    Health and Safety
•    the volunteer’s perspective

There are obviously differences in approach across different events, but there are many common themes and examples of best pracice that we can explore. The usefulness of this site will be determined by your input and perspective – with users hopefully being runners, volunteers, spectators and race organisers.
